Salt Drawing – Jellyfish

SALT DRAWING – JELLYFISH

Here at Cork and Canvas, we’re always looking for new ways to be creative and share this passion with our audience.

With all the uncertainty in the world right now we wanted to create a series of at-home art projects you could do with materials you may have lying around the house.

This week we’re creating a salt drawing!

What you’ll need:

  • Table salt
  • Food colouring or watered down acrylic paint
  • PVA glue or wood glue
  • A canvas, cardboard, paper plate, sheet of paper
  • A paintbrush (A makeup brush will be fine)
  • A jar of water

So let’s get started:

You can see the full video here but we’ll pop all the steps down below also

Step 1:
You’ll want to grab the glue and your canvas. Begin to draw out the shape of your Jellyfish with the glue. You can be pretty generous but try to keep the lines a similar thickness all the way around.

Step 2:
Once you’ve laid down the shape of your jellyfish you’ll want to grab the salt and begin to pour it over all of the glue. Again, be generous, we’ll remove any excess salt in the next step. Allow the glue to dry for about 30 mins (longer if required).

Step 3:
When the glue has dried, lay down something on the table to collect excess salt. Slowly tip the canvas up and allow the excess salt to fall off, a couple of gentle taps will also help.

Step 4:
Now, to create your colours! Take a small drop of your food colouring or paint and place on the plate. Remember to keep them at a good distance apart to avoiding mixing. Add a couple of drops of water to each until you have a watery consistency.

Step 5:
Take your brush and dip it into your water. Carefully place it in the desired colour and begin to add it to the salt. Watch as the salt magically transforms and takes on the colouring.

Step 6:
Allow your final masterpiece to dry for about 30 mins (longer if required).

Once your masterpiece is dry, hang it up, frame it and display it! We’ll be posting these fun at-home art ideas every week so be sure to follow our social media accounts to find out when we post our next one.
